Revelry, history, pomp and the mysterious splendor of one of Europe’s most romantic cities set the stage for the opulent mixed arts festival known as Carnival. Steeped in the religious and cultural traditions of medieval Venice, the Carnival is known for the mysteries of the Masquerade. The Carnival has ebbed and flowed according to the whims of the governments since 1268. It became a must for young gentlemen on their Grand Tours. Held the two weeks prior to Lent, this festival is centered on the Piazza San Marco. Days are filled with masked balls, elegant concerts, confetti and laughter.
